NLC
National Library of Congress (Anglais. En franc. = Bibliothèque nationale du Congrès). Fondée en 1802, à Washington. Ses débuts furent modestes (elle ne possédait que 3000 volumes en 1814 quand elle fut incendiée par les Anglais). Le renouveau s'amorce avec le don que lui fit Jefferson de sa propre bibliothèque. Logée à partir de 1886 dans de nouveaux bâtiments monumentaux, elle devint en 1897 le siège du Copyright Office. C'est la bibliothèque du Parlement américain (elle en a conservé le nom) et la bibliothèque nationale des États-Unis. C'est aujourd'hui la plus importante bibliothèque mondiale pour le nombre de volumes imprimés et de périodiques. Son système informatisé la met en relation avec les grandes bibliothèques américaines et étrangères et lui permet un recensement quasi exhaustif des ouvrages imprimés de la planète.
